川普在新聞稿中盛讚納瓦洛表示，幾年前讀過納瓦洛有關美國貿易的著作，對其清晰論點及研究印象深刻，納瓦洛也預示到全球主義對美國工人的危害，並為振興中產階級指出了方法。納瓦洛是川普競選團隊的資深顧問，競選期間川普談到中國的言論，多出自他的主張，川普並呼籲支持者觀看《Death by China》。

哈佛大學經濟博士學位，是加州大學爾灣分校經濟與公共政策教授，也是出名的對中貿易鷹派，堅信中國大陸以不公平方式參與國際貿易競爭，是導致美國經濟不振的主因。他陸續發表論文，指中國產品的價格是由「補貼、匯率低估、假冒、剽竊」聚合而成，警告美國企業界和中國經濟往來的高風險。納瓦洛還主張美國要對中國祭出高關稅制裁。2011年他出版《Death by China》，說明中國產品對美國經濟的危害，並將這本書拍成影片。

11月初，納瓦洛與川普資深外交國防顧問格雷聯名在《外交政策》撰文指出，台灣是亞洲民主燈塔，但卻是美國全球夥伴中，軍事上最脆弱的一員，嚴厲抨擊歐巴馬政府對台灣惡劣，即使《台灣關係法》保證美國應協助台灣，歐巴馬政府仍再三拒絕提供台灣嚇阻中國所需的廣泛軍售。
